First Aid for Remote Workers
There are a number of occupations that require specialized first aid kits. If you work in remote areas by yourself, you need to consider some of the risks of injury that go with your job. These risks might include:
- falls from heights, ladders and other. Falls account for more than 70 fatalities and 4000 major injuries every year, according to sources.
- dangerous equipment, including chainsaws, farm machinery, trucks, etc.
- hazards in the environment such as deadfalls and branches that cause punctures and other injuries.
- hazardous substances which can cause burns and other injuries.
- animal attacks, including predators, snakes, domesticated animals (bulls, dogs).
If you are in a job that has any of these risks, you need to be sure to know what first aid is needed in each case. Be sure that your company supplies you with all the first aid training you require. Know all the OSHA guidelines that apply to you.
If you are in a job where you work at remote locations, be sure that you have a method of contact, such as cell phone, walkie-talkie, pager or other.
The National Safety Council has an excellent book on Wilderness First Aid. This book is ideal for preparation before you head out and for the identification and treatment of injury and illness while out in the field.
You need to prepare on your own for all of the first aid situations you may face, or you may want to purchase specialized first aid kits. There are a number of companies who sell specially designed kits for these kinds of occupations.
