First Aid Information
First aid kits for use in the summer may be somewhat different from winter first aid kits. Summer first aid kits may include aloe Vera and ointments for insect bites; whereas winter first aid kits may include care for hypothermia. If you have a cottage, its advised that you jam-pack your first aid kit with a variety of items including bottled water.
If you need to administer first aid to anyone you should read the section on blood borne pathogens. Disease can be transferred quite rapidly without the proper care. If you work in an at risk job such as in linen services or in a correctional facility - you must always protect yourself. Wear gloves, ensure your shots are up-to-date, use goggles and get a CPR pocket mask and disposable bodily fluid pick-up kit. If you dont have the bodily fluid kit, ensure you call a professional before trying to dispose of any type of bodily fluid yourself. Remember its wise to always assume the worst when treating first aid emergencies. Protect yourself!
There are many first aid governing bodies in the US. The main ones are the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the American National Standards Institute. There is also the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency, plus the National Safety Council.
The history of first aid began as The Order of St. John, formed in 1099 to help train first aid workers for the battlefields. Its quite interesting to read how first aid has developed over the years.
