Pet first aid kits
There are several ways to treat your first aid supplies for Rover or Mr. Jingles. You can:
- purchase a pet first aid kit.
- choose to include supplies for your beloved pet in your family first aid kit.
- make your own pet first aid kit or use organic first aid products.
Dont underestimate the value of a well stocked first aid kit for your pet. Consider the relief you would have, knowing you saved your pets life after a snake bite or fall injury. Pet first aid can also help you relieve your pets pain. In the event of injury, you may be required to stabilize him or her during a trip to the vet. As in the case of any first aid emergency, the last thing you want to do is scramble around for first aid products.
Pets require all the items you might find in a basic first aid kit for people. You should be sure to include other specialized items, too, as needed:
- the number for Animal Poison Control.
- a rectal thermometer.
Its little known, but many of the same products used for humans can be administered to your pet. You can get a list of recommended dosages from your veterinarian. First aid products used by humans, but also applicable to pets include:
- any stomach anatacid product such as Kaopectate or Pepto Bismol
- Benadryl, for allergy relief
- Aspirin
- Mineral oil
- Splints
- Others
Ask your veterinarian or any other pet health expert about these and other products, such as herbal first aid products.
For human emergencies you call 911, but the first rule of pet first aid emergencies is to call your veterinarian. Call him or her as soon as possible, so illness or injury information is fresh in your mind.
Remember:
Injured or ill animals are under stress and may need space. Injured or ill animals are more likely to snap or bite, even those they love.
