First Aid Products
You dont have to buy pre-made first aid kits. You can make your own using items you need and then exclude others. Its also a really good idea to check the dates regularly on some of your first aid products and replace them as necessary.
Some must-have first aid items include:
- Antiseptic chances are antiseptic and bandages are likely going to be the most used items and will need replacing faster.
- Bandages and dressings - these should be staples in your first aid kit. Get an assortment of various bandages because injuries do not come in one shape or size, and sometimes injuries are in the least likely spot. Bandages dont expire for years. Therefore theyre a cheap investment for long term first aid care.
- Gauze, wraps & tapes if you have bandages you must have tape and gauze. Gauze protects the wound before wrapping. Bandages are usually made of cotton, and if theyre used without gauze, the fibers could get into the wound. Ensure you buy the proper tape a brand that doesnt stick to the skin and reopen a wound when you rip it off. Surgical tape is the best.
- Gloves you need gloves to protect you from blood borne pathogens. Always, always, always use gloves regardless of who the victim is. Better safe than sorry.
- Tweezers are always handy to have in your first aid kit. Tape down tweezers in your first aid kit so they dont fall out and disappear.
- Hot packs & cold packs are for aches and strains and to keep the swelling down.
There are many other items you may wish to include, depending on your budget and your circumstances. You can never have enough equipment for first aid because every situation is different. Sometimes you may have to wing it as you go. Remember - its always better to be prepared.
